Detailed Design of Upgrading/Widening of Roads to Six Lane Standard (Arniko Lokmarga- Suryabinayak-Dhulikhel Section) including Design of 3 motorable bridges (Sipadole Khola, Bhaisepati Khola and Punyamati Khola), IEE and DPR

Project Description

Arniko Highway (H03) is an important link to the hills in the Central and Eastern Regions. It connects the capital city Kathmandu with the Chinese border at Kodari. So far, it is the only motorable link in operation with China. Besides this, a link from this highway at Dhulikhel is to be connected with Terai region in the near future (BP Lokmarga). This highway also branches to other feeder roads like Lamosangu-Jiri, Dolalghat- Chautara and others. Arniko highway also connects the urban area of Kathmandu with those in Thimi, Banepa and Dhulikhel. With the eastward growth of the settlement in Kathmandu, the urban traffic on the highway from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel is considerable. The resulting highway and interurban traffic is already beyond the carrying capacity at certain sections during peak hours. With the increasing trade volume between neighboring India and China, the international traffic on Arniko Highway is going to be increased in the coming years. The construction of the dry-ports at the Indian and Chinese borders as well as the forthcoming Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track will in fact facilitate this additional traffic on the highway. Hence it is high time to widen the highway to cater the present traffic, to attract further economic activities along the corridor and to facilitate the resulting future traffic. The widening of the Tinkune (Kathmandu) –Suryavinayak (Bhaktapur) section of the highway has been initiated. This work consists basically of widening of the double lane road carriageway to 4 lanes separated by a median strip and flanked by paved shoulder. On the both side of the highway, service roads will be built under GON funding. Further, Government of Nepal has planned to extend the widening of this highway from Suryabinayak to Dhulikhel. Total length of this section for upgrading works consists of 16.2 km.

The objective of this service is to carry out Detailed Engineering Survey and Design for Upgrading/Widening of Road to Six Lane Standard including 3 bridges, Initial Environmental Examination, preparation of contract documents for execution of construction works and preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR). Total Project Cost NRs. 2,785.66 million

Assignment Description

Highway and Bridge Design consists of: Review available Feasibility Study reports, Other past studies, Nepal Road Standard, Standard specifications for Road and Bridge Works, PIP report and other DOR publications and guidelines; detailed engineering survey of the selected alignment and its corridor including property acquisition plan & survey of services to be relocated; hydrological studies for the design of drainage structures; geotechnical survey/investigation including soil investigation and material survey for design of pavements and cost identification; traffic and road safety studies; design & prepare longitudinal sections, cross sections, plan and typical details of road alignment & structures; Design of Service Roads; Design of 3 motorable bridges (Sipadole Khola, Bhaisepati Khola and Punyamati Khola), [Sipadole Khola at Jagati (9.64 m. span), Bhaisepati Khola at Sanga (12.24 m. span), and Punyamati Khola at Banepa (17.40 m. span)] Design of traffic intersection (4 nos. intersection namely Jagati, Palanse, Banepa and Intersections) and cross drainage structures; Design of Pavement; Design of Pedestrian Crossings; Road Safety Audit; compilation of cadastral maps of the road and draw the plan of the proposed improvement on the maps; calculate the quantities of civil works to improve/construct the road; Rate analysis and Cost Estimation; Tender Document and Detailed Project Report (DPR) Preparation. Initial Environment Examination consist of; Preparation of TOR; Biological and Physio-chemical Impact Assessment; Social Impact Assessment; Cultural Impact Assessment; Health Impact Assessment; Economic Impact Assessment; Alternative analysis, Impact Mitigation and preparation of Environment Monitoring Plan
