Detailed Feasibility Study of Eastern Main Canal of Bagmati Irrigation Project

Project Description

Bagmati Irrigation Project is one of the large irrigation projects implemented in Terai ecological region of Nepal. It aims to provide irrigation facilities to 122000 hectares in conjunction with generation of 140 MW hydropower through the construction of 117 meter high dam. Due to complexity and resources constraints, the project is being implemented in various phases. In first phase (stage I), the infrastructure construction is being done for 37000 hectares through a diversion barrage across Bagmati River. Further, in Stage I phase II of the BIP project Detailed Study of the present possible extension of BIP project from Jhim Khola to Hardi Khola is also being implemented. Irrigated command area from extension of Main Canal 17,400 hectares with discharge capacity of 112.7 m3/s. Total Project Cost NPR 5.28 billion.

Assignment Description

Assessment of size of the irrigation area. • Conduct L-section and Cross section survey of canal (Main and Branch) alignment and at cross drainages. • Make detail water resources analysis of the source. • Collect Meteorological Hydrological data of the study area for calculating discharge required for supplementary irrigation. • Prepare design and drawings of all the major structures that are proposed for the system. • Collect demographic and socio-economic data of the command area, including employment, farm income etc. required for socio-economic analysis. • Collect all the relevant data from within the command area for the assessment of institutional capability of the water users. • Collect all the relevant data from command area and its surrounding for economic analysis of the project. • Assess the appropriateness of the present cropping patterns in the command area based on current agricultural practice. • Collect all the relevant information from the command area for economic analysis. • Examine the strengths and weaknesses of the current agricultural support services and their adequacy to fulfill future requirements. • Propose realistic cropping pattern, intensity, crop yield, crop inputs in consultation with the water users. • Recommend agricultural practice, the farm household incomes, etc. • Assess existing agricultural support services, extension service, credit inputs and agro processing and storage capacity. • Preparation and submission of Inception, Field, Draft and Final Reports
