Feasibility on Environmental Management of Pollution of Six Urban Rivers in Nepal

Project Description

The feasibility study on environmental management of pollution of six urban rivers in Nepal. The rivers include Sirsiya of Birgunj, Tengra of Itahari, East Rapti of Hetauda, Narayani of Narayanghat, Tinau of Butwal and Kailali Nala of Dhangadhi. All of these rivers pass through densely populated city centers and industrial corridors. The outcome of this study is a framework for environmental management of these rivers by the Department of Water Supply and Sewerage (DWSS) of the Government of Nepal. DWSS is implementing various programs both in urban and rural areas. It provides basic water supply and sanitation access, improved water supply services defined by the National Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Policy 2009. It also involves in mitigating climate change effects in water supply and sanitation service delivery, regulation and bench marking of water utilities across the country as well as mass scale promotion of sanitation activities. Apart from the Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation and Co-financing Water Supply and Sanitation projects, DWSS is active in reducing the pollution caused by sewerage, solid waste, industrial and agricultural runoff of rivers and lakes in urban areas.

Assignment Description

The main objective of this assignment is to conduct a Feasibility Study on Environmental Management of Pollution of Six Urban Rivers in Nepal and come up with recommendations for interventions for environmental management due to pollution. The ultimate aim is to have wastewater free rivers and design of sewer and treatment facilities as necessary to prevent discharge of wastewater directly into the rivers. Further, this project has following specific objectives. • Identify the type, extent and sources of all types of pollution. • Identify economic, social and environmental feasibility of pollution mitigation. • Identify the stretch of rivers with high pollution level. • Propose conceptual engineering designs to mitigate the problems in the stretch of rivers. • Provide estimated cost of proposed social as well as engineering interventions. • Provide Monitoring and Evaluation (M & E) and Environmental Management Action Plan (EMAP) of each rivers.
