Feasibility studies of Bulk Water Transmission Pipeline line System Parallel to East West Highway (Package-02)

Project Description

DWSS is planning for a water supply system that consists of a bulk water transmission pipeline parallel to the East West highway following a suitable alignment, with the perennial river systems flowing north-south to be taken as the source of the water. The water will then be transported east or west and in the reservoir, and finally to the human settlement area through the storage and distribution system. It is expected that such a system will not only help fulfill the water demand of the ever-increasing population along the East West highway, but also help reduce the water stress on groundwater reserves in the terai region of Nepal.

Assignment Description

Desk study and field reconnaissance: collection of previous study reports, legislative documents, topographical and GIS maps and other relevant data and their review for the identification of data gaps, preparation of detailed methodology, collection of information from local DWSS offices, and identification of the bulk water supply source and possible project layouts. • Conduct topographical survey and prepare geodetic and GIS maps depicting all major geographical and anthropogenic features. • Carry out hydrological and meteorological investigations, review previous hydrological, meteorological and sedimentation related study reports, collect stream flow and other hydro-meteorological data, access the consistency and adequacy of the available data • Flood discharge measurement and analysis: Instantaneous maximum flood discharge observed in the gauging station and fitted to the Gumbel distribution to estimate the flood discharge of different return period; Name of Gauging stations: Narayani at Narayanghat (450); Kali Gandaki at Kotagaon (420); Kali Gandaki at Kumalgaon (419.1); Rapti at Bagasoti (350) • Assessment of possible impact of climate change on hydrological characteristics using different scenarios. • Conduct geological, geotechnical and construction material investigations and prepare geological mapping. • Conduct demographic study, collect demographic information of the urban and semi-urban settlements, forecast the population growth, collect present daily water use information for water demand mapping. • Preparation of conceptual design, hydraulic designs and optimization of the project components including intake, reservoir, treatment plant, pipeline and other associated structures based on the outcome of field investigations and engineering design standards. • Identify the intake site on the proposed rivers, reservoir and treatment facilities, transmission pipeline alignment and other necessary components • Conducted Water Quality Testing for samples collected from perennial river systems under the study. • Prepare and establish the design criteria for intake to withdraw water from the river, transmission pipeline, reservoir tank and optimize project components • Propose tunnel or appropriate means for water diversion and transportation through the dam/intake site to the reservoir nearby towns • Economic and financial analysis of the project including analysis of the economic and financial viability of the project, water purchasing capacity of the residents of the service areas, possibilities of promoting the project, etc. • Preparation and submission of reports.
