Project Description

The overall objective of this project is to identify the potential pocket areas suitable for coffee farming. This project will also study and analyze the problems and suggest the measures for their improvement. Besides this the other objectives are identify and select the potential area in Lamjung, Tanahu and Gorkha district for the expansion of coffee cultivation area; identify and analyze the problems and constrains in achieving high productivity and increased total production; recommend the measures to be taken for the improvement of the quality of coffee; study the local and improved processing method of coffee adopted by the farmers and private entrepreneurs; study the working approach of the farmer groups, cooperatives and government agencies related to coffee an study the marketing system and suggest for its improvement.

Assignment Description

Identify coffee production pocket areas on the basis of geographic and climatic condition and counter map. • Conduct soil survey based on land system map covering different aspects of soil characteristics (physical & chemical properties, major elements, moisture retention and drainage capacity. • Make necessary suggestion on soil amendment for the selected pocket areas. • Analyze variety, Crop management and use of agriculture inputs. • Analyze present market situation. • Identify the number of coffee nursery, number of mother plants an seedling plants and their quality. • Study the farmer's practice like pruning, management of shadow trees, and be keeping in the coffee orchard. • Study the measures adopted by the farmers in plant protection management; the inter cropping practice adopted by the farmers in the orchard; The method of coffee bean drying, storage and its processing technology adopted by the farmers and the quality of produced coffee. • Study and analyze the adopted basis for coffee beans price fixation. • Study the internal consumption and market management of coffee; the present situation on research and technology development in coffee; the availability of books, booklets, papers on coffee and communication service; feasibility of coffee cultivation in government land and thin forests and the situation and role of the farmer's groups, cooperatives and professional associations. • Study and analyze the problems faced by the farmers and their needs and the women participation in coffee cultivation.
