Feasibility Study on Regulation of the Brick Kiln Sector and Impacts on the Environment and Brick market Situation in Kathmandu Valley

DANIDA with the need realization strengthening of overall environmental management of brown sector in terms of prevention, minimization and control of environmental pollution emanating for industrial and urban development without hampering economic development process launched Environment Sector Programme Support (ESPS) as a development cooperation aid programme to Nepal.

The proposed study falls under Air Quality Management of Kathmandu Valley and deals with reduction of air pollution in the valley. The air pollution generated from the brick kiln sector, besides vehicular pollution is one of the main sources to deterioration of the environment in the Valley.

The main objective of the study is to form up three to five different scenarios for examples, partial or total brick supply from outside the valley and to assess/predict the impacts on brick market situation, price development in the Valley, environmental an economical aspects and social and economical aspects.

Assignment Description

Review of relevant literature- govt. plan, policy and strategy and ESPS objectives, role and functions, literatures from other relevant organization. • Gathered updated information on expected HMGN regulation and standards. • Describe development scenarios about three to five. • Assess/predict impacts/consequences on followings, with respect to supply objectives, foreseeable regulation and standard, for each development scenarios described/presented: • Brick Supply and demand/brick requirements • Brick production capacity particularly excess capacity of brick kiln in central terai • Resources for Brick e.g. clay-quantity and quality (inside and outside valley) • Price aspect • Identify suitable location and new processes for brick kiln units in the valley-qualitatively and quantitatively • Alternative building materials, which are economically viable and environmentally friendly-concrete etc. • Environmental and ecological aspects • Social aspects-employment, working condition etc. • Ecological aspect on brick kiln entrepreneurs and consumers etc.
