Initial Environment Examination of Dhalkebar-Janakpur-Bhittamod Road Upgrading Project

Project Description

The proposed Dhalkebar–Janakpur–Bhitthamod Road linking East–West Highway (EWH) to Janakpur of Dhanusha District, Jaleshwor of Mohattari District and Bhitthamod at Indo-Nepal border.

The total length of the proposed section is 42.94 Km. The average formation width of the present road is 5–6 m including 3 to 4 m bituminous surface. This one-lane road is proposed for addition of one more lane making two lanes with a carriage way of 7m and 1.5m shoulder in both sides. In addition to lane addition, the project will include culvert widening, shoulder improvements, pedestrian’s walkways, side drainage structures and bus laybys. The road rehabilitating and upgrading of this road has been planned to accommodate a smooth uninterrupted traffic flow and to increase the transactions of goods between Southern parts of Nepal and Indo – Nepal Boarder. The proposed widening will be done within existing 50 m ROW and hence acquisition of new land is not necessary.

Assignment Description

Conduct detail survey and investigation of the present physical, biological and socio-economic condition of the 42.94 km road corridor. • Analyze environmental implications / impacts of road widening • Identification of affected peoples with details including compensation and resettlement • Find out the positive or negative impacts on various environmental resources due to natural phenomenon and road-induced human activities during and after construction road project • Identify and recommend measures for minimizing environmental impacts from proposed construction by employing principles of avoidance, mitigation, and controls • Socio-economic survey through FGD and Household survey focusing on socio-environmental aspects • Identify the major issues that may result due to proposed works on the natural, physical and socio-economic and cultural and religious environment of the project area. • Prepare EMP and responsibility matrix.
