The road is located in Kanchanpur District of Mahakali Zone in Far Western Development Region. The Tanakpur Link Road originates from Tanakpur Barrage in India (290 06′ N, 800 08′ E) and passes through Matena, Tumdani, Tilkani, Tilachaur, Haldukhal, Tilakpur, Bhasi of Mahendranagar Municipality and ends at Mahendra Highway at Km 7+000 near Mahendranagar (280 59′ N, 800 07′ E) of Kanchanpur District. Initial length of the proposed link was 14.51 km according to Feasibility Study Report, which has been to 13.258 km during Feasibility Study Report of which 1.3 Km lies in India. Mahendranagar Tanakpur Link road is being developed by the grant assistance of Government of India as part of Mahakali Integrated Development Treaty between India and Nepal. This Mahendranagar- Tanakpur Link Road on completion will be a part of Asian Highway, Route A-2. The road is being developed to the standard of a National Highway.
