Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) of • Nawalpur – Malangawa Road and • Nayaroad-Barharthawa-Madhubani Road in Sarlahi District

Project Description

The Nawalpur – Malangawa Road and Nayaroad-Barharthawa-Madhubani Roads are two terai roads proposed for upgrading under the Terai Road Projects with the assistance from the Indian Government. The Nawalpur – Malangawa Road is 26.59 km and Nayaroad-Barharthawa-Madhubani Road is 40 km in length and connects the East-West Highway to the Nepal – India Border. In addition to upgrading of the road, the project includes culvert widening, shoulder improvements, pedestrian’s walkways, side drainage structures and bus laybys. The road rehabilitating and upgrading of this road has been planned to accommodate a linking road from East-West Highway to Indian cities beyond the Border.

Assignment Description

Conduct detail survey and investigation of the present physical, biological and socio-economic condition of the both roads and its corridor. • Analyze environmental implications / impacts of road widening • Identification of affected peoples with details including compensation and resettlement • Find out the positive or negative impacts on various environmental resources due to natural phenomenon and road-induced human activities during and after construction road project • Identify and recommend measures for minimizing environmental impacts from proposed construction by employing principles of avoidance, mitigation, and controls • Socio-economic survey through FGD and Household survey focusing on socio-environmental aspects • Identify the major issues that may result due to proposed works on the natural, physical and socio-economic and cultural and religious environment of the project area. • Prepare EMP and responsibility matrix. • Prepare Land Ownership Data of Project Affected people along the road corridor.
