Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) On Sagarmatha National Park and Preparation of Management and Tourism Plan (2006 – 2011)

Project Description

Sagarmatha National Park Management and Tourism Plan (SNP/MTP) 2006 – 2011” has been proposed with a mission to conserve and maintain the biological and cultural values and scenic beauty for the benefit of the present and future generations. The Plan recommends strategies and activities such as Park, Buffer zone and Tourism management, institutional strengthening and scientific research etc. needed to conserve and maintain the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage and also manage tourism, which supports to uplift the livelihood of the communities within the Park and its Buffer Zone.

As per prevailing Environmental Protection Act 2053 B.S. (1996) and its Regulation 2054 B.S. (1997) of Nepal, the implementation of Management Plan of Protected areas and its Buffer Zone requires an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) prior to its approval and implementation. The present Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) report involves the assessment of the potential environmental impacts of those activities, and proposes the enhancement measures of the beneficial impacts, and mitigation measures for those likely to give negative environmental impacts.

Assignment Description

Conduct detail survey and investigation of the present physical, biological and socio-economic and cultural environment of the national park and buffer zone; • Conduct alternative analysis of the activities and projects proposed in the SNP/MTP 2006-2011 • Analyze environmental implications / impacts of SNP/MTP 2006-2011 • Predict and evaluate positive or negative impacts on various environmental resources due to natural phenomenon and human induced activities while implementing the SNP/MTP 2006-2011 • Identify and recommend measures for minimizing environmental impacts from proposed Plan activities by employing principles of avoidance, mitigation, and controls • Propose environmental protection measures (benefit augmentation measures, and adverse impacts mitigation measures) along with Environmental Monitoring Plan • Recommend the decision-makers about the environmental implications of the proposal; and • Identify the major issues that may result due to proposed works on the natural, physical and socio-economic and cultural and religious environment of the project area.
