Pre-feasibility Study of the Sunkoshi–Marin Diversion Project

Project Description

The main objective of this study is to carry out pre-feasibility level study to identify various components of the diversion projects with irrigation and hydropower as the major water users; and as such a decision is made to decide for further study based on it’s economical, financial, and environmental considerations. Installed Capacity of the Hydropower Component of the project is 36 MW and Irrigated command area of Bagmati irrigation project is 122,000 ha. The project cost is NPR 35,685.5 million.

Assignment Description

Procurement of satellite imageries of the area covering the study area, possible headworks site, possible outlet, powerhouse and canal system; compatible to be read along with the digital vector and raster maps. • Desk study with use of Remote Sensing Image Processing and Geographic Information System(GIS) • Assessment of water availability in Sunkoshi basin, Marin River, assessment of potential Area for Irrigation Development and Existing Irrigation Situation. • Design of Irrigation Water requirement for whole command area of Baghmati irrigation project (BIP) through eastern and western main cancel. • Assessment of water availability for transferring Sunkoshi River water to Marin valley after allocation water to the downstream projects mentioned above. • Assessment of water availability at Marin River from different local sources and finding out the required water to be diverted to Marin River from Sunkoshi River also. Calculation of flood frequency of annual maximum series and basin water balance study. • Identify possible dam site in Sunkoshi River. Tunnel alignment (13.1km), power house area, and main canal structures and carry out prefeasibility level of filed survey and investigation. • Pre-feasibility level study of tunnel alignment (13.1km) and its other audit tunnel accessories for diversion project. • Geological investigation of headwork’s site. Tunnel & outlet structure, engineering geological mapping, 20 electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) test of tunnel alignment. • Design of irrigation system, irrigation, hydropower structure, transmission line, design of agriculture development plan, irrigation development plan, hydropower development plan and project optimization. • Environmental assessment of project site. • Estimation of model structures and calculation of cost and benefit of the project and carry out economic and sensitivity analysis. • Construction planning, schedule of the project also conclusion and recommendation of the study. • Preparation and submission of Inception, Field, Draft and Final Reports
