Similar to other sectors, the Gorkha and Dolakha earthquakes and their aftershocks severely damaged a large number of temples and monasteries in different districts in the country. Formerly, Earthquake Monastery Reconstruction Project (EMRP) and now Earthquake Monastery Reconstruction Section was established under Central Level Project Implementation Unit, Grant Management and Local Infrastructure (CLPIU-GMaLI) / National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) to carry out maintenance and reconstruction of damaged monasteries due to recent earthquake. EMRP under CLPIU-GMaLI/ NRA intends to support respective Monastery Management Committee by reconstructing the severely damaged monasteries and carrying out the major and minor maintenance for needy monasteries in close coordination with Buddhism Philosophy Promotion and Monastery Development Committee. About 1,360 monasteries were surveyed which were claimed damaged at different damaged levels by the earthquake in different 29 districts. Damaged levels are distinguished as non-damaged to severely damaged types with ranking Grade 1 to 5 where “Grade 1” indicate “Not damaged” monasteries but at risk that needs some sort of protection works in the vicinity, “Grade 2” indicate “Lightly damaged” monasteries that requires “Minor repairs”, “Grade 3” indicate “Moderately damaged” monasteries that requires “Major repairs”, “Grade 4″ indicate ” Heavily damaged” monasteries that can’t be reuse without reconstruction through demolition and “Grade 5” indicate “Severely damaged” i.e. completely collapsed monasteries that needs reconstruction. According to damage assessment survey done in F/Y 074/75 about 71 monasteries are categorized as “Grade 1”, about 129 monasteries are categorized as “Grade 2”, about 202 monasteries are categorized as “Grade 3”, about 299 monasteries are categorized as “Grade 4” and about 596 monasteries are categorized as “Grade 5” out of about 1,360 monasteries.
The main objective of the assignment is to carryout Geotechnical Soil Investigation and prepares design, drawing, estimate and specifications of specified monasteries. For individual monasteries, design shall be site specific either Framed Structure or Masonry type or any other suitable design based on geographic location, Age of monasteries, availability of construction materials and other factors like transportation, availability of funds etc. (Considering Ancient Monument Preservation Act, 2064 if needed).
