Preparation of Flood Risk and Vulnerability Map of the Kathmandu Valley

Project Description

The overall general objective of the study is to prepare the flood risk and vulnerability map of the Kathmandu valley. While the specific objective is to utilize the state-of-the-art technology in the field of satellite image processing and GIS and carry out GIS-based impact and vulnerability assessment of the Kathmandu valley.

Assignment Description

Study and data collection of the water-induced disaster susceptible areas. • Use aerial photo, satellite imageries and topographic maps to extract relevant data. • Conduct benchmark survey to determine the level of all the bridges in ring-road and other critical locations within the city area of the valley. • Collection and review of reports, maps and satellite imageries, hydro-meteorological data, historical data on water-induced disaster, socio-economic data • Conduct rainfall and run-off analysis • Prepare Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using satellite imageries stereo-pair image (Kathmandu Valley area about 665 sq. km) • Preparation of flood hazard classification criteria, questionnaire, form and formats, reports • Conduct flood mark survey, socio-economic survey, key informant survey, focus group discussion • Carry out vulnerability assessment of the infrastructure and settlement in the field at specific vulnerable communities • Identification of awareness level, the rescue routes, and availability of evacuation centre including depiction of these on the map. • Proposed minimum required width of all the rivers under natural condition inside the urban and sub-urban areas. • Indication of the existing settlements and infrastructure under threat delineating including administrative boundaries • Use of GIS, Satellite image processing software to analyze and prepared flood risk and vulnerable maps using relevant hydrological analysis models.
