Preparatory Survey for the Project for Rehabilitation of Irrigation System in Eastern Terai Area in Nepal (Chandra Canal Irrigation System)- Baseline Survey

Project Description

Chandra canal off takes from right bank of Trijuga River in Saptari District. Trijuga River is a tributary of Koshi River. Chandra Canal is the oldest irrigation system constructed in 1979 to 1984 BS (1923 AD to 1927 AD).
Chandra canal is oldest Government managed irrigation system during Rana regime. The gross command area under Chandra Canal Irrigation System is 13,700 ha. and the net command area is around 10,000 ha. That is considered as fertile land. It was constructed during 1923-1927 AD by British Engineer. Local materials and manpower were used for the construction. As per the local inquiry made, the earthwork of all the canal system had been done by voluntary contribution and all structural work by the government agency. After the completion of structure work, the system provided regular and reliable irrigation until 1933. When the whole systems were damaged by earthquake in 1934 then immediate repair work had been done to restore the structure into functional shape

Assignment Description

The baseline survey was conducted in 120 Households in nine (9) village tertiary canals in the beneficiary area of three (3) secondary canals of Chandra Nahar irrigation system covering upstream, mid-stream and downstream irrigation service areas. • Made trial questionnaire survey with the farmers and analyzed workability of the questionnaire by considering local culture, local terminology, capacity of farmers etc. and updated through pre-testing of the survey questionnaire. • Provided training to enumerators. • Confirmation of target villages and canals including identification of target household farmers benefiting from the target tertiary canals. • Conducted interviews with the household farmers using the survey questionnaire. • Data entry of the collected data in the approved format • Report preparation and submission to the JICA Study Team.
