The Road Network Development Project is developed in response to the Government’s transport development emphasis on expanding the country’s transport facilities to ensure a more balanced development throughout the country and specifically to provide links to the districts currently not served by the roads. The roads covered by the Project lie in the eastern and central parts of the country and represent important links that can contribute to poverty alleviation. The Project addresses the important sector issue of promoting the development o local private sector contractors capable of improving and maintaining roads. The Project assists the Government’s Department of Roads (DOR) to improve its capacity to manage road maintenance works through a program of performance based contractors, road safety and heavy vehicle management.
The main objectives of the project with civil works including bituminous surface are; (i) Pavement Resurfacing and Strengthening of East West Highway (Belbari-Chuharwa, 140 Km), (ii) Road Improvements and Rehabilitation Works (164 Km; Biratnagar-Rangeli-Bardanaga 39 Km, Urlabari-Bardanaga 28 Km, Damak-Gauriganj 22 Km, Dolalghat-Chautara 25 Km, Pouwa Bhanjyang-Phidim 24 Km, Hile-Basantpur 26 Km)), (iii) New Construction of Basantapur – Khandbari Feeder Road (96 Km), (iv) Road Safety Improvement and Axle Load Control, and (v) Performance Based Maintenance (PBM) of 282 Km. Total Value of Consulting Services 208,142,501 (Local JV Partners) and Total Value of Construction works of LCB Contracts: NRs 2,821 million and ICB Contracts: NRs. 1,610 million.
