Study of Impact of Climate Change in Water Induced Disasters in River Basins and their Management

Nepal has three ecological regions with different climatic characteristics notably mountain, hill and terai as the major three geographic regions of Nepal. The geology of the country is very fragile in almost all part of the country from mountain to chure-hills. In the context, the studies of impact of the climatic change on the water induced disasters are very much needed. And it is necessary to propose mitigation measures and adaptation methods and technologies. Therefore the study of was required to identify the impacts of climate change on water induced disasters to minimize, mitigate and adapt the impacts. The Study area of Koshi River Basin was 27806 Sq. Km.

Assignment Description

The main purpose of the study is to find out and analyse the impacts of climate change on meteorological parameters, hydrological parameters, water resources and water induced disasters in river basins and suggest the mitigation measures and adaptation technologies. • Perform the hydrological and metrological study and analysis of a selected river basin • Identify the type, mode, kinds of water induced disasters and the extent of damage in the river basin • Analyse the climate change issue hence to develop and propose the climate change scenarios in the river basin and predict and/ or project for future • Identify the impacts of climate change on the meteorological parameters, hydrological parameters and water resources of the basin. • Identify the impacts of climate change on all type of water induced disasters with their future prediction and/or projection • Analysis and predict and/or project water induced disasters and their effects for the future in the condition of without climatic change but with other changes (land use, population, settlement, urbanization, migration, socio-economic condition, development of infrastructures, environmental degradation, deforestation, human interventions to the nature etc.) using GIS. • Compare the water induced disasters with and without climate change condition for the future. • Evaluate the impacts of climate change on water induced disaster)evaluation of impacts up to present, predicted and/ or projected future impacts, impacts under proposed climate scenarios for the future) • Identify the vulnerable people, community, domestic animal, land, area, forest, Wild animal, plant life, development and physical infrastructures etc. • Identify the indigenous and traditional method and technologies to cope with water disasters under climate change conditions • Generalize the study to suit for other river basins of Nepal by using appropriate methods e.g. modelling. • Analyze the prevailing legal instruments and policies regarding climate change, impacts of climate change and water induced disasters • Preparation of landslide and flood hazard mapping. • Suggest for present and for the future, the traditional, advanced and appropriate methods, technologies etc. to minimize and/ or mitigate and /or eliminate and/or adapt the impact of climate change on the water induced disasters and give the appropriate suggestions for policy makers • Propose the appropriate and applicable management mechanism and management related resources and activities for the future. • Preparation of Reports. • Carried out Interaction with different institutions, stakeholders, vulnerable people and communities. Five workshops have been organized including 2 days residential expert panel workshop at the end. • Capacity Building/Knowledge Transfer and Training Programme [The Programme Includes: Meteorological Data Extraction (APHRODITE, HADCM3-PRECIS), Bias Correction, Future Climate Scenario Development, Hydrological Modeling (HEC-HMS, HBV), Hydraulic Modeling (HEC-RAS), Landslide Hazard, Flood Hazard Mapping] has been conducted for 18 participants for 10 working days.
