Survey / Study on Project’s effect (implications/inconveniences) related to the social and associated activities in the surrounding areas of Kathmandu-Bhaktapur Road Upgrading Project

Project Description

The proposed Kathmandu – Bhaktapur Road Upgrading project, with a total of 10.5 Km starts at Tinkune of Kathmandu and ends at Jagati in Bhkatapur district, is one of the projects which the Government of Japan is keen in extending its assistance to the Government of Nepal. This study has been conducted to fulfill JICA’s requirements on IEE Study.

The study includes the investigation of effects to people within 100m outside of ROW (on both sides) with respect to social, environmental and associated activities. The study was based on information collected from primary sources supplemented with information from secondary sources. For collection of primary information, an interactive participatory approach was adopted to ensure active participation of the concerned stakeholders at district, VDC and settlement levels.

The opinion survey on the alternative road plan as suggested by the JICA Study team was also conducted to find out the general public’s opinion for consideration by the design team.

Assignment Description

Conduct detail survey and investigation of the socio-economic aspects of people within 100m outside of ROW on both sides of the road. • Identification of affects to peoples within the communities due to road widening • Find out the positive or negative impacts on various on the surrounding areas regarding the implications and inconveniences to the social and other associated activities. • The preparation of an inventory of households and historical /religious places of importance that are likely to be severely affected due to the project • Perform a detailed survey on their socio-economic conditions and livelihood of being resettled in a different place. • Consultations in different groups of each settlement along the road corridor in order to assess the implications and inconveniences to the social and other associated activities due to the commissioning of the proposed upgrading of the road. • Identify the Socio-economic benefits and their development, potential beneficiaries and benefits • Identify vulnerable groups and socio-economic effects / impact • Identify impacts in different locations of the project area. • Identify institutional & cultural impacts and social & gender impacts in different locations of the project area. • Identify overall impacts in different locations of the project area.
