The Project for Assessment of Earthquake Disaster Risk for the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal

Project Description

JICA implemented a Disaster Management Project including Earthquake Risk Assessment, where it strongly recommended urgent implementation of mitigation and preparedness measure for Earthquake Risk Reduction. In order to formulate and update the disaster management plans to ensure the sustainable development and the creation of the disaster resilient society following Sendai Framework for DRR, “The Project for Earthquake Disaster Risk Assessment for the Kathmandu Valley” was to start. However the Gorkha earthquake occurred just before the starting of the project. The project components are modified and will contribute to re-assess the risks against Earthquake Disaster for the Kathmandu Valley together with planning for Build Back Better (BBB) Recovery and Reconstruction, as well as formulation of Disaster Management Plan to build resilient the Kathmandu Valley against earthquake disasters in the future.

Assignment Description

The main tasks carried out by the consultant include: Activity 1: Population Distribution • The population distribution is calculated with ward-wise population distribution of 2016 and population growth rate of district and municipality of Kathmandu Valley. • The estimation for ward-wise population distribution is calculated in basis of 2011 Census data and OD survey data. • Prediction of population growth for ward-wise is done for 20 26 and 2036 is done. The population distribution is expressed in GIS. Activity 2: Social and Economic Statistics Data (Assessment of Current status (2014) and prediction for (2026 and 2036)) • Calculated economic scale in terms of GDP with breakdown of category into industry, district, municipality • Analysis of Economic growth rate of past 20 years with breakdown of category into industry, district, municipality • Calculation of construction cost of residential house, schools, hospitals, commercial complex and industrial facilities, roads, bridges and lifelines. • The socio-economic data collection also included seasonal features and differences of economic activities of Kathmandu valley, building permissions system and procedures, information on evacuation routes and open spaces and also indicators regarding tourism sector (revenue collection, number of service providers, number of people engaged in tourism industry etc.) Activity-3: Community Profile • Data collected through interview with community leaders and representatives of resident organization and also through existing data and documents to develop community profile. • Data collection conducted in 5 communities each of 3 pilot districts (15 communities in total) • Data collection included basic information such as number of population and households and population growth trend, population by gender ethnic group, caste, religions etc. Community characteristics, land use status, social condition, number of schools, number of medical facilities etc. And disasters and disaster risk management information such as condition of community, list of past major disasters, community organizations, facilities for DRM in community, current issues and problems etc. Activity-4: Personal Profile • Basic information collected through questionnaire interview of 180 persons in 15 communities • Data collection included basic information such as Family structure, income source, caste, age, gender, ethic group, education level, occupation etc. And disasters and disaster risk management information such as types of houses, damage situation of houses due to Gorkha earthquake, past disaster experience, knowledge on disaster risk, participation in DRM organization in community etc.
